Samaná peninsula is very lush verdant area with its unspoiled beaches, clear mountain streams winding through lush, tropical rain forests, vibrant coral reefs, internationally known whale-watching and many other attractions. This area is a true paradise for nature lovers and ecotourizm!
A highway connecting the Samaná peninsula to Santo Domingo is rumored to finally open to the public this summer, 2008. This is expected to halve the driving time from 4 hours to 1.5 hours as it is a straight 120km, connecting from just east of Santo Domingo (near the SDQ airport) to just west of Sanchez. There is significant tourist development evident throughout the Samaná peninsula, particularly that of large all-inclusive resorts, in anticipation of the increased tourism to follow the roads completion.
Attractions include El Limon Waterfall, which is approximately 300 metres above sea level and has a 40 metre drop that ends in a pool of clear water, Los Haitises National Park and El Salton del Limas.
Samana’s north coastline is a scuba diver’s dream – sheer drop-offs and pinnacles that rise from 165 feet to within 15 feet of the surface. Underwater visibility can range from 100 to 150 feet.
Experience the world-renowned spectacle of whale-watching, where humpback whales gather in the turquoise waters during mating season (mid January to mid March). Boat excursions take groups out to witness these incredible creatures frolicking in the sea.
